Campaign for North Korean Human Rights
On August 25th when typhoons passed through the Korean Peninsula, 25 North and South Korean students did street campaigns to improve North Korean human rights in front of the Seoul Station. There were people who cheered us on as we did the campaign, saying, “you are doing the right thing,” and “good days will come,” We were so encouraged by these remarks. On the other hand, there were people who said “why are you talking about North Korean human rights in the Republic of Korea? Just go stuff yourselves with North Korean coal.” The important thing was that enthusiasm did not cool down at the campaign site. We saw that there are many who are still willing to join us in our activism.
"They (North Koreans) are not ‘someone else’ to us" – Oh Jun, Ambassador at Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations.
The North Korean residents’ lives have collapsed because they have met the wrong ideology and brutal leadership. We cannot pretend to not hear their voices. We will act together until their nationality and identity are recovered.
